General Hebe Grow Guide...

Hebes are a versatile shrub. In most cases they are fairly compact, evergreen shrubs that look as well in a mixed herbaceous border as they do planted with other shrubs. They can even be used as ground-cover or a low-growing hedge. As they are evergreens they are pretty low maintenance, and their flowers offer pollen and nectar to beneficial insects over a long flowering period.

Where to grow:

Most hebes are pretty hardy but it is worth checking the variety description when buying. In general the larger leaved varieties are more tender than those with smaller leaves but either way it is always best to plant hebes in a sheltered position that will provide some protection from cold winter winds. Hebes will grow in any soil that is moist but well drained, even if the quality of the soil is pretty poor, but they won't like sitting in water. They will also tolerate salt and so are ideal for coastal gardens.

Whilst they will grow in full sun or partial shade, we would recommend they get a good few hours of full sunlight, or they can become leggy. If you do end up with a leggy hebe however, all is not lost, you will just need to prune it back as far as you can without cutting into dead wood and then relocate it to a sunnier spot where it should rejuvenate.

How to grow:

Hebes are very low maintenance and are easy to plant. Is they do better in poorer soils, there is no need to add compost or organic matter when planting, you can just dig a hole pretty much the same size as the pot you have bought it in, drop it in there and replace the soil around the root-ball. Just make sure you don't plant it any deeper than it was in the pot. Hebe's are best planted in late spring to allow it to establish through the summer.

As for ongoing care, hebes are shrubland plants originally and so need very little maintenance. They do not require feeding, in fact this can also cause them to become leggy and develop weak floppy leaves. The only thing you need to do to extend your hebes life is to prune back the dead flowers and up to a third of the foliage in late summer which will encourage strong, new, bushy growth.

If you want to try and propagate hebes from cuttings, these are best done in summer. Simply cut away some non-flowering stems, strip the lower part of it's foliage leaving just a few leaves at the top and push several of these into a pot of free-draining compost. Cover the pot with a polythene bag or use a propagator and remove the cover when you see new growth. These should be ready to plant out the following spring.
