National Tree Day 2023 is on Thursday 05 October.
This year’s theme is ‘Nuts about Nature’ – ‘Fiáin chun Dúlra’ with the Tree Council of Ireland paying particular attention to the Hazel tree. This tree is very common in Ireland and the hazelnuts are ripe by August, so, there may be still be a very few left on the Hazel trees near you if they haven't been eaten by the squirrels.
Hazel trees support lots of other living things such as lichens which grow on the bark and branches. 140 species of lichens have been counted growing on Irish hazel trees which have also been recorded to support 73 different species of insect. It is an excellent tree for promoting biodiversity and this year the Tree Council of Ireland is encouraging schools across the nation to plant at least one Hazel tree. To help with this they are even giving away free saplings for schools to plant, details of which you can find here >>>
Ardcarne Garden Centre is also celebrating National Tree Day this year, by offering all customers a chance to win one of 6 Native Irish Trees worth €59.99 each. To enter the draw, you simply need to make a purchase between now and the 05 October online to be entered automatically or you can make a purchase in store where you will be given the opportunity to complete an entry slip. The draw will then be held on Thursday October 5th 2023 and winners will be informed shortly afterwards.*
*Please note that all prizes will be made available after the draw and must be collected by the winners from either Roscommon or Boyle.
